Primers and Coatings
In accordance with Steel Joist Institute (SJI) Section 3.3,
the standard shop paint is a primer coat intended to protect
the steel for only a short period of exposure in ordinary
atmospheric conditions and shall be considered an impermanent
and provisional coating.
The standard shop paint shall conform to one of the following:
- Steel Structures Painting Council Specification 15-68T,
Type 1 (red oxide).
- Federal Specification TT-P-636 (red oxide)
- A shop paint which meets the minimum performance requirements
of one of the above listed specifications.
For additional cost, we can offer galvanizing, which significantly
improves the corrosion resistance of the steel component for
exposed locations. Joists that may be in any unconditioned space or exposed to any caustic
or saline environments should be evaluated by the project
designer for additional protection.
